"Well, that depends." Linx grinned at this remark, mainly because of what it suggested. He actually did have something for Raiden to see, though. "Shut the door... And follow me, to the back room, I have something to show you. Something I know you'll like. And just for you, albeit standardized..."

"Oh?"
Closing the door, the older mouse followed the younger into the back room.
"So... what did you want to show me?"

The torches in the room were already lit, from when Linx had been back there himself. He raised a paw and silently pointed to a suit of armor against the right wall. It couldn't totally support itself and had a mannequin-like support structure beneath it, but it was clear that the suit could cover and protect most of a mouse's body. It was large enough for either of them to wear it, comfortably.

"Hmmm... Interesting..."
Examining the suit from all sides, Raiden shrugged.
"It looks the part, but I'm not overly sure on the lack of armour for the entire body... That said I've been taking to wearing the upper right parts of my platemail in battle if any of it... Mostly because that arm has damaged muscles. I can't raise my arm sideways more than half-way..."

"Well, the parts that don't have armor are areas that aren't fatal if hit. The kind of armor needed to actually stop a projectile from one of our weapons is so thick and strong that there's no way for even myself to just wear a platemail-sized suit of it. It's only armored here where it has to be." Linx paused and looked up at the suit, a low smile on his face. It was elevated off the ground slightly so as to make it easier to examine the lower parts. "This is the L3U... In other words, the Land Warfare Uniform. Consider it future standard issue."

"Even platemail, as heavy and thick as it is, is light enough to be worn fully by a mouse and not inhibit movement too much. Even while wearing it, I was pretty much as agile as when I wasn't."
Thinking about what to say next for a moment, Raiden continued.
"Besides, even a none-fatal injury can be damageing in circumstances. I've acrued enough to know that myself from hard experiance."

"Yes, it can, but you..." Linx paused and stared at Raiden incredulously. The words he'd just heard hadn't registered until just then. "What? Platemail is light enough to be worn fully by a mouse and not inhibit movement too much... It gets down to about, what, 20, 25 kilograms in the very best of instances? Besides, in this case, a full suit of it would be more like... 40."

"You really haven't examined suits like mine before have you? Mine's been thinned out from so many milenia of fighting, since my earliest ancestor, Raiden I, wore it... Not to mention from the size differences, and the various rounds of aesthetics each new wearer adds to it. Lighter and more manuverable than the original article."
Shaking his head, Raiden sighed.
"A good shot to an exposed or relatively weak-armoured area will not go too well for the wearer. A shot to the back of the leg or arm might not be imidiatly dangerous or fatal, but it will cause your foot to drag, or your arm to be lower on your swings. I should know, form experience."
Rolling up his right sleeve, Raiden showed the scar on the top of his arm, right on the joint heading inwards towards his chest.
"That is from an axe-wound I suffered nearly twenty years ago, while I wasn't wearing armour, it's effects are still plain today. I can't raise my arm too far now."

"Did what I said before kind of bounce off?" Linx sighed after glancing at the scar. Raiden wasn't being entirely relevant and that didn't help with conversation. The fact of the matter was that he couldn't deal with plain old plate armor anymore. "The weaponry I've invented has rendered plate armor completely useless at conventional thicknesses. In order to sufficiently protect from it, the wearer's armor has to be over two centimeters thick, which is far thicker than typical plate armor... That means that a normal full suit is impossible, and the amount of area that's actually armored has to be reduced."

"No it didn't. I just relate things to past experiences."
Rolling the sleeve back down, Raiden had another look for a brief instant at the armour on the stand.
"Armour the most vital areas at an inch and a half, thin it out on the less vital spots to a standard thickness on the extremities of the paws and feet. It'll be lighter than it is now, but still highly protecting and leave the wearer a lot more mobility over all."

"Well, I haven't done this kind of armor before, so it still requires a lot of experimenting... That's heavier than normal plate armor, though. Basically plate armor with a sickeningly thick cuirass, actually..." Linx couldn't imagine wearing anything as thick as the armor Raiden had just described. For one thing, that was just a lot of metal for their purposes. "Most paw-to-paw combat has dropped in value dramatically with black powder in the mix, though, so it's not like we have to actually armor for that."

"You'd really like to think that huh? Ambushes will kinda negate your advantage. Then you have one more problem; Ammo. You run out, you're in trouble. You have got to really try to think about that. Melee weapons never run out of ammo... And besides... Indirect fire, and siege engines will also kinda kill you no matter your armour. And if there's a balista aimed at you, you can't dodge easily in that suit. Nice knowing you when it hits... Armour over agility isn't exactly fun if you can't dodge quickly."

"Well, actually, you can. But you wouldn't be able to do a thing in the suit you're proposing I turn this into. Siege engines are something I can't worry about because that's not what you're trying to protect from with armor, and ambushes offer only a small advantage with correct training. And as for ammunition, that'd be a problem if it ran out. Except it won't. By the time any soldier is out of ammunition, they'll be too tired to fight further anyway." Linx didn't understand Raiden's opposition on the matter. He wasn't even sure if Raiden himself did. The older mouse seemed to be suggesting nothing in particular. "Why the combativeness, Rai? It's a suit of armor that I designed for the new weapons that are taking over."

"Because you know how I stand on things. I was raised in a time where the sword was the pinicle of fighting. My armour was reforged to both adapt to my height, and to be suportive to my fighting style. I can't do fully armoured with anything past what I have, because I'm used to armour that while protecting, offers me great freedom of movement."
Looking directly at Linx, Raiden never let his level, expressionless stare wander.
"Even if it is introduced and compulsary, I'll not abandon my white armour for it."

"I don't think anyone would make you," Linx sighed yet again. Raiden's argument came across as dubious, mainly because he didn't want the mouse to wear it himself. It was something for standard issues, not mentally jagged warriors from the wrong era. "The sword isn't the pinnacle of fighting anymore."
