“Gah! Nobody told me guard duty was so boring!” Briala complained, resting her chin on the battlements of Otter’s Fort. She had thought being a guard would be fun: pacing back in forth, sharply calling out commands and making shrewd observations. However, that was far…far, far from the truth. She had spent the past hour or so staring at the same bit of forest, watching the trees grow. So far, the ash nearest the wall was winning.
“Ouch!” Briala protested as she moved her stiff, cold muscles. “Bother bother bother!” she grumbled, standing up and arching her back in an attempt to loosen up. There was no one else around to quell the boredom, so she entertained herself by talking…to herself. Much longer of this, and she would go crazy! Well, crazier than she already was…
Briala began to pace back and forth across the few yards of wall she was assigned to guard. She shivered in the night air and drew her cloak tighter around her, watching her breath mist out in front of her. I’m bored, and I’m cold, and I’m hungry now! she complained in her head, growling fiercely to no one.

Cressida had been in the area and decided to take left over food form the kitchens to the poor soul on guard duty. Walking she noticed someone leaning on the battlements, she smiled and ran toward them. "Well hello there Briala!" She said with a cheerful voice and a warming smile.

Briala started as a voice shouted her name, breaking the silence of night. She glanced up, and was relieved that it was Cressida. Better yet, she had food! "Hello Cressida," she greeted cheerfully, her spirits already risen from having someone to talk to, other than herself. "Please tell me that food's for me. I haven't eaten in hours!" She stood up and stretched again, wincing slightly.

"Well I brought it for a poor soul, and that seems to be you right now...So here you go." Cressida handed the food to Briala with a smile. "So...how has guard duty been going?"

"Poor soul indeed," Briala said mournfully, before tearing into the package Cressida had brought her. "Yum!" was all she said, before she began digging in, taking a loaf of bread and began devouring it, taking swigs of the cordial in the canteen Cressida had also brought. When she finally slowed down eating, she set about answering Cressida's question. "Guard duty is utterly boring! There's nothing to flipping guard!" she complained, throwing out one arm to the empty, silent forest.

Cressida laughed. "You sure have that right." She sat down next to Briala and smiled at her.

Feeling satisfied after her quick meal, Briala sprawled back on the ramparts, staring up at the stars. Then she quickly scrambled up, remembering she was supposed to be guarding. She sighed, resting her chin on the battlements again and staring out at the forest without really taking in what she was saying. "So, what's new with you?" she asked Cressida cheerfully. There wasn't anything special going on with Briala, but that didn't mean everyone had a boring life.

Cressida stood up next to her and leaned on the battlements also. Briala was right, there wasn't much to look at. "Nothing real new..." Cressida said, "What about you?"

"Nope, nothing," Briala answered tiredly, scanning the bushes in front of her. "Until we have a battle, or something, I've got nothing to do but sleep, train, and eat," she chuckled, reaching up a paw so she could tap on the battlements. A silence fell over the two, broken only by the rustling of wind in the trees and the occasional call of a nighttime bird. "So..." Briala said finally, trying to think of something to say. "You never gave me my sword lesson," she finally said, chuckling slightly.

"What about tomorrow morning?" Cressida asked, "That would be a perfect time since I'm at the training grounds anyways." She said with a smile. It sure is boring out here.... Cressida thought to herself while resting her head on her hand.

"Okay, sounds good," Briala agreed sleepilly. Her eyelids were beginning to droop, and she was already half asleep. I was not cut out for guard duty...In an attempt to keep herself awake, Briala picked through the package of food Cressida had brought her, pulling out a small bag full of hazelnuts. She hoisted it on the battlements and began to toss them down into the forest, aiming for different leaves, or branches, or knotholes. Because ofo her archery, she had very good aim, and she rarely missed.
"Yes!" she hissed triumphantly as a hazelnut flew into a knothole not much bigger than it was. Grinning, she turned to Cressida and offered the bag. "Want to try? It's mildly entertaining, at least. Besides, if there's any vermin down there, we might hit some," she added with a chuckle.

Cressida giggled, "Sure! It sounds awfully fun!" She said with a smile while grabbing some hazelnuts from the bag and throwing at her hearts content. She missed a lot, not exceptionally good at archery. She still carried a bow, but she preferred training with her sword a lot more. She would laugh every time that she happened to miss a knothole and Briala would hit straight on. "You sure have a great aim!" She exclaimed with a smile.

Briala laughed and threw a hazelnut over her shoulder, batting it with her rudder and sending it whizzing into a large-ish pothole. "Years of archery can do that," she laughed, tossing a shelled hazelnut up in the air and attempting to catch it in her mouth. However, this time, it bounced off her nose and fell to the ground. Briala pouted for a second, then laughed. "I guess even I have limits."

Cressida chuckled. "Yeah, it looks like it." She said with a smile. She also grabbed a hazelnut and tried to toss it into her mouth but missed terribly. I happened to fly over the edge of the battlements, not even close to her mouth. Cressida laughed. "I'm not any better than you are." She said with a smile.

Briala chuckled as a hazelnut went flying over the walltop. "Hmm, I guess not," she commented, laying out a row of hazelnuts on the battlements. She took out one of her daggers, flipped it around, and rapped each hazelnut sharply with the pommel stone, so it broke open to reveal the tasty bits inside. She popped on in her mouth and offered one to Cressida. "Want one? Hazelnuts are my favorite."
