With a nod of acknowledgement, Wolfsbane gathered some pine resin and scattered them like soup over the bodies. After spreading enough around, Wolfsbane took a branch from the last remaining campfire and tossed it into the bodies. Instantly, the fire spread throughout the bodies, helped by dry branches and pine resin. Wolfsbane could not handle the smell of the burning flesh.
"Permission to leave the area sir?"

"Go ahead, I'm just gonna check these tents, and... Yeah..." Archon, apparently far less perturbed by the fire, was actually affected by it even more than Wolfsbane and was beginning to feel rather nauseated by it. However, he felt a need to go and investigate what seeemed to be less purely evil an establishment than he'd originally suspected. The problem with these bandit camps is that they keep ending up not actually being all bad. It takes all the satisfaction out of killing them! "You know what I found in that one tent?"

Wolfsbane's expression turned to that of curiosity.
"What did you find?", asked Wolfsbane softly.

Archon did his best not to sound moved. It didn't work as well as he'd planned. "I found the first beast I killed within the actual camp... Shot her right through the canvas of the tent, I never saw her face until she was dead. It was this girl, she didn't even have any weapons on her... That letter I picked up from it? It was a letter from her sister down south celebrating her seventeenth birthday. I just killed a kid again."

As a warrior, Wolfsbane knew what Archon was going through. He often came against gangs of vermin who towed their families with them. Wolfsbane was caught between killing just the dangerous ones and leaving the children and females alive... but he soon found out the female vermin were just as bad as the males. Plus, the children probably would grow up to be vermin who preyed on the weak.
"I know tis a sad life we lead... but we must remember that they're not called vermin cause they're nice. They are murderers, and the Flitcheye are especially cannibals. What if we didn't kill the young ones? Maybe after seasons have passed, they will probably follow the path of their parents and murder innocent woodlanders."
Wolfsbane didn't mention the fact that it was impossible to predict a babe's future behavior.

"Yeah... But does that justify ending a life based on crimes that haven't even yet been committed?" The whole ethical nonexistence of what he did bothered the mouse from time to time. There wasn't much getting around it, with arguments for either side seeming to just bounce off one another. "I mean, she was just some girl. Would you say she's a future thief because she had some chainmail on?"

Wolfsbane knew
"No... but I would say she was a vermin just by seeing who she were friends with. There's a saying... You are judged by the company you keep. Let us say for arguement's sakes, that she was the nicest lass you ever clapped yer eyes on. But by looking at the company she kept, a few questions are raised. She probably at least witnessed the murder, robbery, and cannibalism going around here, if she did not participate in them. If she was so innocent, why didn't she leave and try to make herself a new life?"
Wolfsbane also knew the futility of the debate they were having. Wolfsbane had had the debate with many warriors, ranging from young'uns to veterans. After some time, it just seemed like a formality to him, but he knew it was far from it

"Yeah... This is actually kind of stupid. Probably the worst thing any warrior can do is look at a corpse and try to imagine the life leading up to it... That letter her sister apparently sent her didn't actually help with that one. There's no way to find out who was actually the bad beast here now that they're all dead." Archon glanced at the pile of burning bodies in the middle of the clearing. At least olfactory fatigue had started to set in. "The other tents, you want to check those?"

Wolfsbane was apprehensive of what he might find in the tents. He hesitated for a second then nodded his head. Wolfsbane walked into the closest tent. There was nothing but a blanket on the ground. Wolfsbane went through the rest of the tents and found nothing of interest. He reported to Archon.
"There's nothing else of interest."

"Well, that's because you didn't look in the one I looked in," Archon shot back absentmindedly as he watched the pillar of smoke spreading up into the sky. There wasn't much left to stay for, so he eventually turned to the squirrel with a businesslike air. "How about we get out of here?"

Wolfsbane's expression turned to that of confusion.
"My apologies, I didn't check in that tent because you already did. I thought you told me to check the rest of the tents. Otherwise, I'm ready to leave."

"Yes... Let's go. I have nothing more to do here, they're all dead." Archon sighed and looked to the edge of the trees. There was nothing left to do; bodies and buildings had been pillaged, and nobody was even alive besides the two of them. The mouse started to head off towards the fringe of the clearing. "C'mon..."
