Linx was busy rifling through old, old crates. The first ones that he had built, to house the oldest of all the supplies... Including what appeared to be some of his first CAR bullets, made months before. They looked a lot more personally made and oddly quirky than the newer batches, but could work, if their seals weren't all ruptured.
On an impulse, he decided to splurge on a trip to the target range with this new... Or old?... Ammunition. As he thumbed round after round into a no-longer empty magazine, he heard a noise at the front door and headed out to the main room, still adding bullets.

Hey Linx. Testing out a new batch, or something? Or are you just in the habit of pointing a CAR at friends and their daughters?
**Raiden gave a half smile at his friend while a slimmer maid entered the shop imidiatly after him.**
Erm... Hi Linx...
**Since her ordeal some weeks before, Amathyst had been getting a growing need to be with her father. Clad not in her usual attire, she had borrowed a shirt and trousers from her twin brother for some reason unknown to all but herself.**

"Hey, hey, it's just the magazine. The real weapon is in the back." Linx finished loading the magazine. "This is an old batch, actually. I was looking through some of my older crates and I found these just sitting there, I must have made them months ago... And hi, Amathyst, it's really good to see you." Unlike a typical greeting, this one wasn't just being polite. It was a heartening sight to see Amathyst out and about... Although Archon was resting in his room more, seeing as he had just tried and failed at... Back to these bullets.
He gestured to the back room with his free paw, holding the magazine with his other. "You two want to see some cool stuff? I'm hoping these things still work after sitting there for so long, but there have to be at least a few intact."

Sure, why not.
**Stepping, deeper, once more into the shop that seemed like a second home to him most days, Raiden gave Linx a slightly wider smile. It was good to have his daughter back in a sense. Not that he minded her attention, but she should be resting in his opinion. He had spent months resting after an incident at Redwall a few years ago had broken a few ribs while he was helping to repair the archway into the Great Hall and a section landed on himin a way that smashed two ribs on his right side, left him bleeding badly and semi-concious. No, it was good to have a daughter who whished to be with her father, but not when she ought be resting.... But how could he refuse his daughter nearly anything? He'd give her the world if she asked for it and he could deliver it... Oh how Zahi would have loved to see this turn of events...*

Linx returned to where he had been in the back room, waiting for Raiden and Amathyst to catch up before picking up the CAR and slapping in the magazine with his dominant paw while using his non-dominant left paw to hold the foregrip, so he could keep the stock braced against his shoulder. "Right, let's see if this works..."
He briefly took aim at the freshly replaced target, pulled the trigger and heard a click. The round hadn't fired. "Pressure leak or something..." Manually cocking it this time, he ejected the still-intact bullet, chambered the next, aimed... No dice. He tried the third round, ejected it, the fourth, ejected it, the fifth, ejected it. Exasperated, he looked down at one of the cartridges, picked it up and pushed against the valve with his claw. "Well, I should be hearing air escaping when I'm doing this, or at least getting decreased resistance, but it's not happening!... There's just less air in these."

These ARE old cartirges afteral Linx... Maybe they've just gone rotten like fruit does.
**Raiden and Amathyst had followed Linx into the back room and watched the failure or the rouns to fire.**

"There's no reason for them to just rot, these are sturdy metal cartridges, not fruit, it can't decompose or anything... I know when I made these in, what, late September, every batch I threw together worked great." Linx paused for a moment, thinking... Late September. "I need to go get a torch."

I wasn't refering to the metal cases, I was refering to the air inside.
**Freeing one of the metal torches from the sconce in the wall, Raiden carefully passed it over to his friend.**

"Air doesn't decompose." Linx grabbed a pair of pliers from the desk and held one of the bullets by the cartridge in it. Then he held the torch underneath the bullet. It didn't take long for it to go off. "Explain that."

I can't. Unless you want some morally sanctimonious drival about the will of Gods and Goddesses, I wouldn't ask me.
Dad, how can you say that to Mr Linx?!?
How can I? Hmmm... Because I can, and we always seem to end up doing it. right Linx?

"Right, Raiden... You're not here for scientific input anyway, just watching..." Linx lowered the torch, gazing at the heated cartridge clamped between the jaws of the pliers. "The heat made it go off... The amount of air didn't change, so the size of it had to. It shrank when it was cooled and expanded when it was heated. You two just got to witness a really cool discovery, you know that? Just figure out a way to use this knowledge..."

Who cares how it happened? All I know is that air is there for breathing. If it shrinks, it shrinks. If it doesn't, then it doesn't.
**Raising an eyebrow at the discovery, Raiden sounded like the Clan beast he was partially raised as.**

Casmir was feeling refreshed from his time at the river. He wandered back into town and ended up back in the marketplace. He heard a shot from inside Linx and Archon's shop, and wandered in. No one in the front, so he let himself in the back. Here he found Linx, toying with one of his weapons, and two beasts he had never seen before. "Hello Linx." he said, and turning to these other beasts, "Good day, I am Casmir." and smiled warmly.

"I guess this is where we split, Raiden. You're sorta dismissing it... I take this in. I'm trying to think of a way to use this discovery in new technologies right now. I was curious, my curiosity got me more knowledge and I'll be using it in a second." Linx's brow furrowed as he thought further about what had just happened. This would take a while to brainstorm. "One thing's for sure, I care. How do you think I made the repeater, or the CAR? I care about these wacky things."
It was only after all this that he even noticed Casmir. "Oh, hi..."
