Well, nobody was particularly antipathetic to him and he did attempt to murder someone.

But he was raised wrongly. They blamed everything on him. They all treated him like dirt except Bryony.

That, on the other hand, is very true. (I'm glad you made that point.) He didn't really get a fair starting point, what with all the stigma of being a ferret, although an alarming portion of what he was blamed for was valid.

But if in the first place he was not blamed and he was not treated like dirt then maybe it would be different.

This isn't an argument. It's just a discussion.

But we're not arguing. We actually agreed about Veil. Wouldn't believe it if I hadn't read it with my own two eyes.

I think BJ keeps them the species distinct for easier reading by children, but at the same time, he knows older readers would be annoyed if there were no gray characters.
Though I think in his mind badgers are paladins and foxes demonic without exception, at least so far. Eulalia! (the new one) has a fox kidnapping a badger in hopes of training him as a warrior slave. However the badger escapes many weeks later just as righteously angry as other badgers.
That's a pretty blunt example.
