In all honesty, there was no good place to test-fire a weapon like the CEL. Linx was carrying just two full magazines, each carrying eight shells, on him at the time, and one was in the CEL's respective well as he stepped out into the middle of the road and raised the launcher in one paw.
He was tentative to take the foregrip still, worried about sparks from the explosion hurting his paw. This was why he had taken the opportunity to dress up like he thought a gunner should dress up, with a short-sleeve black shirt, black shorts, black, standard-issue boots, black gloves and, notably, a pair of mesh goggles that only slightly hampered his vision. It was still easy to thumb back the hammer and sight a target.
The target happened to be an old trade cart that had been looted by bandits and left to rot on the side of the road some months before. Linx pulled the trigger, saw the puff of smoke envelop the fiery flash, heard the loud bang through the rubber earplugs built into his goggles and watched as the shell tore the cart apart. The CEL seemed to have found a good use for gun powder, all right.

Well, if that isn't something burning, I don't know what is...
**Walking down the road, Raiden saw the plume of smoke in the distance... Heading back in the vague direction of the fort with his sword held in his un-hurt left paw, the mouse picked up his pace by a lot. As he neared the fire, he could see someone in the distance from the flames.**
Identify yourself!
**At that distance, and with the fire there, Raiden couldn't tell who it was on the other side of the wreckage to himself.**

"Linx, the king of all implements violent," the mouse called out, grinning behind the black cloth covering his face from his nose to his neck. He took not getting hit by bits of flying metal seriously. It appeared Raiden had arrived to screw things up, though. "Did you come out here because you changed your mind?" This wasn't necessary except as a confirmation that it actually was Linx. That was something only he would know to even say.

Well, I'm only out here because I was down the road and I saw the smoke.
**Sheathing his sword, Raiden carefully walked around the fire to Linx's side of it all.**
I see you have a new toy to play with then.

"Finally got to do something with that pyrotechnic powder... It's a closed-bolt, barrel-action weapon. And it uses black powder to fire steel shells filled with the same powder... Look." Linx deftly cocked the weapon, which entailed turning the foregrip clockwise about thirty degrees, sliding it forwards until it could go no farther, and then pushing it back into place. A spent cartridge sailed through the air as he thumbed back the hammer, the catch for which was on top of the receiver. "And now... And now I can sight a target. You want me to hit that cart again? What's left of it?"

May as well. Not like there's anything else to hit out here...
**Stepping past Linx, Raiden turned back round to watch what happens next.**
Fire when you're ready. I'm in no rush.

"I'm having an adrenaline rush," Linx replied cheerfully. "And plug your ears, this thing is loud." With that, he took aim at the cart and pulled the trigger. Again, there was a deafening bang as the shell was launched, and a cloud of smoke masking a burst of flame from the barrel. The remains of the cart were thrown in every direction in a shower of fire and shrapnel, too far from either mouse to risk hurting them.

**Putting his paws over his ears, Raiden watched as the cart detonated in a spectacular fashion.**
Why do I get the feeling that these are going to cost at least one of us a lot of money in investments?

"Oh, this won't cost me much, not when I have you around," Linx responded with a grin as he cocked the CEL again but neglected to brush the hammer back just yet. "It's just a weapon to succeed the fire thrower, which I'll be free to put on the open market now that we have something that'll trounce it in actual combat. You know, I can't sell newest-generation weapons outside the fort... Anyway, not that big an investment, especially with confirmed sales in the hundreds as it is. You can help out if you want, though." The grin didn't go away. He could always find something worth putting money into.

You always seem to know the ways of parting me and my money don't you?
**Raiden's grin was about half the size of Linx's, but it wasn't a bad thing to invest in Linx's sometimes crazy ideas... Sometimes, it was just a little costly instead.**
I can see that these new toys of yours are going to make things explode very easily... whatever's hit by it would be roasted with ease I think.

"It's far cheaper than the fire thrower, too. A lot lighter, a lot more maneuverable, and it takes about five seconds between each shot, as opposed to three minutes. I'd say it's worth the investment," Linx agreed, the grin not leaving his face. It didn't actually matter, of course, since his face was masked. "After all, these ones explode on their own. Other things just get tossed around and filled with shrapnel." This could be implemented in that line formation...

What about a fireing line of them? About two/three lines of troopers with 'em, while one line is reloading, the next fires. It's effective with bows and crossbows, so why not with these?
**Taking one last look at the inferno consuming the cart's fragmented remains, Raiden nodded a little.**
If it does that much damage, then it would be worth the investment.

"They're already doing it with repeaters. The only problem I can think of is that all of the smoke would make it impossible to see the enemy... Not to mention a breathing hazard. But if the back line, the standing one, were armed with these, and the two front ones still with repeaters, that could be reasonably formidable." Assuming nobody was bad enough a shot to land a shell so close to them that the blast radius overlapped their own troops, of course. What do you mean, should be worth the investment? It's a fire thrower in a lighter, faster, nimbler, cheaper package!

Trying to attack that driectly is like trying to march into a windstorm of metal. Nearly impossible to do... Unless you have ample protection of hundreds of bodies between you and the rounds. But that's where you have several such units in the force. Little place to hide that way.
**Taking his hat off and wiping his paw across his forhead, Raiden sighed.**
Gonna take half the fun out of battle for beasts like me though... but then again, being flexible is the mark of a good soldier.

"What, you think the sword is gonna go away? No... It has its niche in furious melee. No ranged weapon with melee capabilities has matched it as of yet," Linx reminded him in an almost soothing manner. At times it was like Raiden couldn't be denied his usual things or he'd fall apart. Actually, it was always like that. "The day of the purpose-built paw-to-paw soldier, though... That was yesterday. Today is the day of these weapons that can stop a stampeding charge right in its tracks and tear them apart."
