Please Note: This thread and what it discusses is currently under debate in the polls board.
Otter's Fort isn't on par with the traditional Redwall timeline, which isn't much of a timeline since technological and social advances barely exist in it. It may be confusing for new members who expect to find all of the typical Redwall-ish traits about this site and don't, thus the writing of this post. This details the gap which sets this site apart from much of the ROC and, by far, the books.
First off is time. Otter's Fort, as a site, is set ever-so-slightly ahead in time from the actual Redwall timeline. This is why there are so many technologies– Steam power, repeating ranged weapons, compressed air, even the hot air balloon– that are present here and may seem rather out of place. Giving a warrior character a bow or crossbow will end up being like giving a present-day soldier a flintlock musket. It's simply old. Even in areas well outside the fort, its diffusion through trade gives all but the most remote villages access to exported technologies such as crank-operated repeaters.
Second off is society. This is a significant topic I really feel a need to say anything about. It's a lot more diffused than it's been previously. As is the case with all Redwall material, there's very little in the way of a true language barrier, even if dialects are still diverse (They are within any continent). This doesn't mean that everyone has known everything on every corner of the region before now, or course. It can take just weeks for information to be carried on all those trade ships alongside their cargo. This results in the entire Redwalliverse populace being a lot more 'tuned-in', even if they don't actually have radios at this time.
I almost forgot to even include this– Economy. Everyone's using gold coins still, it's not like we can have much in the rate of inflation since gold is being mined at an equal rate to population increasing, but everyone is using these and the days of bartering, particularly at the fort, are all but gone entirely. Keep in mind... You'll get to keep most of the money you make, the fort income tax is 15 percent. However, it's not actually kept track of by the OF administration, so use your discretion here.
Knowing this is critical to creating and using a character here. I'm glad you took the time to read over this information– Well, I hope you did- since you'll be needing it to not appear severely uninformed at this site. Knowing the technological, social and economical differences between Otter's Fort and traditional Redwall is something you should be glad yourself to know. If you aren't already, though, you will be when you put your newfound knowledge to the test and pass it.
Thanks for reading this.
