Times had been hard lately. The river just did not seem to be as productive as in times past. Even in the rare instance that a traveler did meander by on their boat, it was with a party of four or more. Way too many for Weghul and Spinetooth to handle. It was almost as if beasts were getting smarter these days.
Weghul stood up in the coracle. In this side stream they had lodged their boat in , they were able to observe any boat that passed by this stretch of river undetected. It was in short, the perfect hiding spot. Weghul looked over to his side and saw Spinetooth dawdling in the reeds that covered the sidestream. Weghul was about to kick Spinetooth for potentialy blowing their cover, but than stopped. He threw himself flat upon the deck of the coracle and slipped into the water. Nearing Spinetooth he hissed "Norra make sound, dem hairymouse come down 'stream near t' ussen." Dull witted though Spinetooth was, He knew when to obey his boss and when to ignore him. This was a time to obey.
Weghul made ready to open the sails of the coracle whilst Spinetooth manned the rudder. They only needed to wait until the Hairymouse had passed before making their move. Who said that they weren't any good? Maybe their luck had changed.....

It was not a "hairymouse" that passed by the concealed rats but a large otter, Terg Broadsword. He was clad in his usuall brown pants and light blue sleevless shirt. He whistled quietly as he walked along. He was was bare pawed and walked int eh shallows of the water. Across his back was strapped his broadsword and and at his waist was his dirk. He stroad cheerfull and carelessly through the woods. He came to the sidestream and was preparing to jump across it. He stood in the shallows poised ofr the leap. A small rustle drew his attention to the side but he had already jupmed and it was to late to look back.

OOC: Hey yall so i'm back and i think im gonna play it as if thaddius just dissapeared into the woods for a long time but is now back.
BIC: Thaddius swan gracefully under the water with the water like a swallow in the air. He had been away from this area for along time as he was a wandering spirit but decided to return to reaquaint himself with old friends. As Thaddius swam he noticed a figure up ahead leaping over the river that looked like a familiar otter friend. His excitment grew as he readied to leap from the stream, but before he did he saw a distubance in the waves near the sidestream. He decided it was best to stay hidden for now and not let either know of his presence. So he slwoed to a stop near bye where the otter lept from and waited beneath the current.

Spinetooth had truly gotten rusty in his ability to manuever a watercraft. Weghul knew this but he had no other option at this time. "Cum Der hairymouse" (Weghul had bad eyesight so he thought a full grown otter was a vole) "Der just pas' us, no looky back be j'ist fine with us" He growled under his breath. "Kays' Spinetooth, Jist as 'e jumps out 'v over ussen, we shows 'im whos stream it be and get 'im blind".
The otter jumped the sidestream entrance ,and continued on his way. "Git going!" Weghul hissed at his steerbeast. Than he realized exactly what was on the otter's back(even weghul's bad eyesight can discern a broadsword) He jumped back down to where Spinetooth was steering and attempted to grab control of the rudder. "Leggo stoopid, can' yew see dat beast 'as a bigga sword, kill ussen both?" Spinetooth whined as he tried desperatly to regain some control of the rudder. "Cap'n, yew al'ays says one 'hing den says 'nother, Is gits' confused".
While they were struggling with the rudder, somehow the sails of the coracle opened. It happened that there was a strong wind, and the coracle began to exit the sidestream. Weghul and Spinetooth were both thrown flat onto the deck as the boat careened out of the reeds and crashed into the bank on the other side.

Terg stroad on his way. It must have been a bug or somthing that caught his attention. Surely if it was some vermin they would have taken the chance to spring on him while he was hopping the stream. Suddenly ripples shot through the water and a loud crashing sound came from the other bank followed by the sound of two beasts fighting. Terg spun, drawing his broadsword in one swift motion. He looked at the odd rats and had to struggle to keep himself from grinning. They could be dangerous to others but to him they looked foolish. Wadeing into the stream until the water slapped against his waist the large otter called "Hey you two! What are you doing? Haveing a little trouble with yur boat?" Sheathing his sword Terg swam swiftly across the river to pop up beside the small coracle. He grinned and made his way to the bank as he drew his dirk instead of his sword.

Thaddius saw the otter cross the stream not far from his hiding spot (was that Terg?) he thought he had recognized him.
Thaddius popped up out of the water silently from the water qnd saw that it was indeed Terg. He also saw the the vermin in th coracle and decided to watch what happened. So Thaddius quietly walks to a tree behind Terg and leans on it spinning his dagger in his paw.

Weghul was the first to recover from the impact the coracle had sustained. It looked like the starboard side was splintered, and would need a competent boatbuIlder to fix it. Spinetooth lay to the side, apparently unconcious. "Wadda minoote!" He said to himself. There was no way the otter had not seen that accident. A quick glance over the top of the deck confirmed as much. The otter was heading their way!
Quickly, Weghul dumped his knife and his sling into the shallows(discreetly as not to be spotted.). He turned spinetooth over, grabbed his short sword, and plunged it into the river as well. Dullwitted as both of them were, Weghul still had sense enough to tell he was overmatched. He looked up again. The otter was now closer, but this time,he had drawn a dirk and was proceeding cautiously.
Weghul shook Spinetooth awake. "Wakey stooopid, canna yew not git up?" He yelled in Spinetooth's ear. Spinetooth awoke groggily. "Worra happ'n did we git dem 'hairymousy?" He moaned in a voice Weghul thought was a little too loud. Weghul was about to strike him when he heard a sound behind him. Turning round he noticed that the otter was now almost besides the boat, dirk held high.
Weghul started to panick when his eyes caught up something that was wedged into the dry portion of the splintered deck. Apparently, when this coracle had been built, a pice of parchment had gotten stuck inside the boat(Or maybe its placing under the watertight seal of the deck was intentional). Weghul grabbed the parchment and looked at it. Ignoring the stupid comments now being made by Spinetooth he turned it over to the side with markings on it. It was a map of mossflower, with detailed notes written into the margins. Weghul, being illiterate, could not read what the writings were about, but he knew one thing very well. The big red X, apparently further downriver, along the very portion of stream they were now occupying.
Weghul saw his chance. He stood up in the boat waving the map frenticly like a flag. Pointing and gesturing to the red X, he hoped that the otter would mistake him for merely a harmless beast on a treasure hunt.

---------------- ooc:I didnt specify what the map was saying or anything, so it really can go anywhere from here I think. Terg or thaddius can expand on this if they want, or go another direction with it.

OOC: Ok. Interesting turn of events.
BIC: Terg eyed the two rats suspisuoisly. He lowered his dirk and advanced slowly on the rat. "A treasure map eh? I get the feeling it wasn't in that little side stream back there, from the way yeh burst out of it like a pack o wolves was on yer trail." The big otter tried to look at the map but the rat was waiving it about like a mad beast. "Is your freind hurt? He must have taken a nasty blow on hilt of that sword in there. Good thing yeh got rid of it." Terg was doubtfull to say the least about the rats olny being treasure hunters but he couldn't start a fight over nothing.

Percieving the otter to have lowered his dirk, Weghul stopped waving the map around. Instead he kept it stable, at around chest high and pointed to it. It was too late to back out of this now at least. If he had known the otter was that easily fooled, he might have formed a plan at least.
He dragged Spinetooth up with his free hand, and turned back to the otter. "Me anna Spinetooth 'ere wer jist onna lookout over dis map" He elbowed Spinetooth then to tell him to play along. Spinetooth Replied, "Yeh me anna Cap'n 'ere were jist lookin fer de lost treasure of de las' greatrat" (Refrencing an obscure searat story about the last of the greatrats who had buried his treasure in a secret location) Weghul raised an eyebrow at Spinetooth, maybe he was'nt so dumb after all...
Weghul took over for Spinetooth. "We 'ad just come down from upstream, ter look fer dis X 'ere. De reason you norra see us is because we took dis breakers in de 'sidestream fer de day." Weghul gestured downriver. "Wid yer leave, yer 'onour may we depart from 'ere and go down ter search on foot?" (done)

Terg grinned inwardly at the rats odd speach. "Yes go ahead on your way. I wouldn't mind coming with you a ways if that is all right. I love to hunt treasure. I won't keep any of it. You two can have it all to your selves." Terg grinned roughishly wondering what the river rats would say to his request. He still doubted the truthfullness of their story.

"Well perhaps you would like some company then from a REAL seaotter", Thaddius said with a wink while emerging out of the slight shadow of the tree ,and sheating his dagger. "How are you you yellow bellied swamp hopper"

Weghul was both pleased and angry at the same time. On the one hand, they had managed to convince, the otter of the truth of their story. The bad thing about it though, was that they now had to actually go look for some treasure that he wasnt even sure was still there.
He decided to concede to Terg's offer. " Me 'n Spinetooth 'ere don' mind iff'n you were to join us. In facts we could start nows if yew want us ter do sir" So saying, he jumped off the wrecked coracle onto the streambank. He motioned for Spinetooth to follow him.
"We's be going now, do's yer best ter keep up." Weghul winced inwardly, He now had to be under armed escort while weaponless. At least there was always the 'treasure'. He looked at the map. He looked again to make sure he had not mistaken anything. There? Why there? He certainly had never noticed anything unusual at the spot where the x was marked. Maybee..
His revirie was interuppted by a nudging from Spinetooth. "Cap'n ders somebeast up ahead jist around d' bend'. Weghul looked up from the map. A big streamdog had just stepped out of the trees onto the bank. Two big riverdogs? Weghul's problems now had grown. Even if they had weapons, they could never hope to overcome these two. "Iffn yews wants ter come wid us, yer welcome sir. We's just be's pore innocent beastie's on 'de hunt fer treasure" As he said this, he held out the map, just in case the creature had not understood him. (done) ----------------------------------------- ooc:Weghul is now heading downstream. He 'invited thaddius to join the treasure hunt, and is now very uneasy. I would love to see where you all go with this.

OOC: Great! Hehheh! We will go can go interesting places with this thread!
BIC: Terg's face broke into a wide grin as Thaddius walked strode toward him. "A real sea otter? I don't any around, but meself. You my mate are a sorry excuse fur an otter kit tryin' to tote around a sword." Terg slapped his freind's back heartily and said. "Sure we'd love yeh around as long as yeh keep out o' the grub. "
