The otter pup stumbled through the forest, vacantly sucking on his left paw while his right one waved around in front of him to move any branches or leaves out of the way. He was tired, and hungry, but he didn’t want to stop. He didn’t want to go back home! Home was a bad place, and he thought he could find something better. Someplace where they were nice to him! But he had to find someplace first, and that was a bit of a problem.
On a spur of boundless energy, Tavi Dawnstar drew his “sword,” Prentiss, from its sheath, and began slashing his way through the forest, shouting, “Yah! Yah! I gots you, nasty vermins!” He found this game very entertaining, and it took him far off his intended course, which had been to march west until he hit something. However, just as well he went off course.
After about an hour, a new shadow falling over Tavi caused him to pause in his “attack.” “Woooooooooow,” he breathed as he looked up at the huge wall towering over him. At first he was petrified. What if they were the vermin he had just been attacking? But he grinned when he saw there were otters on top of the wall. This must be the fort! Well he was an otter, so they should let him in, right?
Boldly, Tavi marched up to the gate and began to bang on it with his tiny fists, shouting, “Lemme in! Lemme in! I’z hungwee and tired, and I wanna come in!” He decided he wouldn’t stop banging until someone opened the door to let him in, so he continued to pound on the door

The pitch, intonation, vocabulary and source height of the voice on the other side of the doors, coupled with the fact that the pounding sounded weak and low down on the door enough to easily come from a juvenile beast, gave Linx a good idea of how harmful whoever on the other side wasn't. The mouse signaled to the guard up on top to open the gates, but they were already being opened by the sentries and he was left to stand there behind them, shouldering his repeater and hastily buttoning his coat to look a little less fearsome.
There was an otter who couldn't have been any more than five, standing there and looking lost. Linx immediately beamed, which looked a tad strange considering how dark and warlike his clothing and armament appeared. It always did, so he didn't exactly care, striding up to Tavi with a jovial but curious air. It wasn't every day that a beast so young simply showed up. "Can we... Help you?"

For a second, Tavi was speechless. Whoa...scary mouse! was his first thought, and he hung back uncertainly. However, the mouse seemed friendly, so Tavi decided not to worry. A second later, he began to giggle. "Ha, silly mouse! This otter fort! You not an otter!" Tavi continued to giggle; there was a mouse who thought he was an otter!
"I wanna be a warrior! See see see!" Tavi drew Prentiss again and began to slash at imaginary vermin, a fierce scowl on his face. "But now, I'm hungwee! and real, real tired," he added, putting away his dagger and assuming an expression of innocence and sorry. "Help me please, Mousy otter?" He looked up at the mouse with big, sad eyes; it usually worked for getting what the otter pup wanted.

"...Call me that again and all you'll get is a closed gate, I am not an otter and I'm not trying to be one, either." Having spent little time around young in the first place, Linx was never really affected by whatever they did. He was absolutely serious about shutting the gate on this one, since he would do that for any beast of any age who called him a mousy otter. And laughed at him.
This was enough to keep Linx hanging back himself. So was Tavi's slashing the air with a dagger. Of course, this part was also enough to merit Linx's concern. What is he doing with a blade like that?... He looked adept enough with it to slash his paw open or something. Linx started to comment, but decided against it.
OOC: Fierch?

Tavi pouted for a second, considering his options. He still didn't understand why a mouse was at an otter place, but he didn't want to be locked out. He was hungry and tired, and the fort looked like fun! "Okay, sowwy Mousy," he apologized, trying to sound sincere. He sheathed Prentiss, the dagger, and began to bounce around, trying to see past the mouse so he could see inside the fort. "Mouse let Tavi in? Please please please?" Tavi thought a moment, then brightened. "If you let me in, I'll tell you a secret!" he added in a secretive whisper. OOC: don't know what you're talking about

"You have a secret? ...Everyone has secrets, why should I care about yours? I'll let you in. Come on. One thing I don't want to be known for is locking young ones out." Linx stepped to the side and gestured to the road into the village. That dagger still irked him, but he didn't comment on it still. "I said, come on."

Tavi skipped in, though slightly annoyed that the mouse didn't want to hear his secret. It was a really good secret too! However, he was glad he was inside, and expected that someone would help him with food. Maybe the mouse would, but that didn't seem very likely right now.
"Who are you? I'm Tavi. Rikki Tikki Tavi," he giggled, amused at his joke. He continued to chatter, assuming the mouse wanted to know all about him. "Tavi Dawnstar, that's the whole thing. Nobody else knows though," he tapped the side of his nose in a ridiculous attempt to look wise. "Ssh! Don't tell!"

OOC: No one minds me stepping in, I hope? We need more threads that aren't one on ones anyways.
*Kade had just been taking a stroll around the outer wall, not on top but beside it on the inside. He was bored and that meant that he was walking around with no real place to go. What he didn't expect was to run into a beast he knew on the way. This beast in question was Linx with a little otter that looked way too young to be sporting the dagger he had sheathed. Either way, this time he would be the one saying hello. It being his first time to actually greet somebeast first instead of the other way around, he was a bit shy even though he lived in the same house as Linx.* "Hey Linx and uh... little otter." *That sounded about as stupid as stupid could get and he knew it. He winced inwardly at it.*

OOC: This isn't 1894, Briala...
BIC: Linx glanced to Kade as the mouse approached, then cringed when he heard something about 'Linx and little otter', or something to that extent. He was right in the middle of dealing with a four-year-old and now he had... A mental four-year-old to help out. This couldn't get any worse, or so it seemed. Maybe it couldn't if the fort was suddenly under attack and his clothing had suddenly vanished... Along with his arms. "Hi, Kade," the mouse muttered loudly enough to be heard, if nothing more. "As you can see, I'm a little busy at the moment... Something you wanted to say to me?"

*OOC: You don't say Linx? Deary me, I'm way too behind on my calendar then * Tavi laughed as another mouse joined them. Another mouse! At an Otter Fort! Some part of Tavi's brain registered that that must mean that it wasn't just an otter fort, but he ignored it. "Hullo!" he greeted cheerfully to the new mouse. "Me Tavi! Don't know him though," he pointed to the old mouse, wrinkling his nose. "I think it's a secret. Can you help me?" He changed subject abruptly, tilting his head to the side. "I'm real real hungry, but he won't help me!" Again he pointed at the first mouse and pouted belligerently.

*Kade hadn't had time to respond to Linx before Tavi was talking in a fast paced baby voice. Kade looked down at the otter, wondering why Linx wouldn't help him.* "Well, that's not very nice of him, is it?" *He was in the process of trying to think of a place that would be suitable for a baby to go into and get food. That most likely ruled out the tavern because of the alchohol that was sold there but then again he wasn't much of an expert on that kind of stuff. Most of his time was spent wandering around, not hanging out in the tavern.*

OOC: No, Briala, you're way too ahead. "Rikki Tikki Tavi" is only valid come 1894.
BIC: "It's not every day that we just have an otter who can't be five showing up at the gates," Linx started. "He said... Dawnstar, though. I swear, I know that name. Uh, one of the enlisted, it's a female, can't... Can't put my finger on the name." Feeling uncomfortably old and incompetent, Linx scoured his mind for a first name. He could do nothing until it was found, but at least he now knew that this otter wasn't going to be orphan number 812.

*OOC: Pssh, whateva. I just remembered it from a story I read in elm school * The new mouse, who the other mouse said was Kade, made a point. "I know! He's not being nice, but it's okay, because you'll help, right?" Tavi beamed a huge, innocent grin. The other mouse began to talk about other stuff, but Tavi was really hungry now! He reached over and grabbed Kade's arm, tugging him into the fort. "Come on, Kadey, help Tavi get food!" He didn't know if the other mouse was going to come, but this one seemed more helpful to him.

*Kade allowed himself to be lead off by Tavi. So in saying, he hadn't heard anything that Linx had said. He turned his head as the baby otter continued pulling him along.* "Linx, are you coming or what?" *After all, Linx had been the one talking with Tavi in the first place.*

Linx reluctantly followed after a few seconds' thought. The last thing he wanted to do was leave now... And the second last thing was to stay. He decided to set their course to the barracks, disregarding Tavi's clamoring for food for the moment. It would be a better idea to check for relatives enlisted. "Let's head up to the barracks first, Kade, Tavi... Tavi, I think there might be someone here for you."
He didn't give much thought as to who this otter's first name was. After all, running over 300 soldiers made it impossible to remember every single one's name... That was what the squad leaders were for. Who started calling them Squad Captains, anyway? Captains? I mean... No! "You have a lot of family, Tavi? Any that left a while ago?"
