"Tavi, this is your older sister... Briala. And she is alive, I told you. Briala, this is... You know who this is, right?" Linx gestured from one otter to the other, stepping aside to let the two greet. Welcome as this was, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of apprehension at the idea of having to relocate these two to a different room. Since, as far as he knew, Briala didn't own a house, he would have to give them a different room on the first floor, and there were few of those. Wait, could we knock down one of the partitions we set up on the attic projects?

Briala stared at Linx for a moment, disbelief and confusion shining clear in her eyes. "I have no idea what you're talking about!" she finally said, looking down at the little otter again. Linx's words sank into her mind...Tavi...sister....alive?
"How old are you, Tavi?" Briala asked suddenly. He beamed a grin and replied proudly. "Four ana half seasings!" Briala moaned and covered her eyes with a paw. A brother...a tiny, Dibbun brother, who clearly was under the impression she was dead. Now that she looked closely, she could see the resemblance. He looked uncannily like her, though less delicate and feminine. It made sense that she didn't know about him, because he would have been born after she left home. A brother....
"Hey!" Tavi shouted, realizing he was being ignored. He grabbed Briala's paw and began to swing it wildly. "Linx-Mouse said my ghostie sister was here! You find her pwease!" He added the last word in an attempt to seem polite and beamed an innocent grin. Briala looked up at Linx again, completely lost for word. Help me! her eyes screamed.

"She's your living sister," Linx responded flatly. "I am not joking. She is not dead. You can accept that and start your life here, or you can keep play-acting like you are right now and it'll be wandering through Mossflower all over again." After a while, this just got annoying. Unlike Archon, Linx lacked patience when it came to dealing with young, and this grated on his nerves so much that he was inches from just leaving.
Fortunately for all involved, he didn't. It was obvious that Briala was just plain suffering with this newest, shocking addition to her family. "Sorry about this, Briala," the mouse started, changing his attention back to her. "I found this guy out at the gate, he just... Wandered here, it seems. But he is definitely your little brother."

Tavi stared at Briala with wide, scrutinizing eyes. Finally, something clicked in his head. Briala saw this too, and smiled half heartedly. Tavi giggled, "Yay! I has a sister! A not ghostie sister." He swung her paw, just to make sure it was really there. Satisfied with that, he moved on to the most important order of business. "Linx-Mouse won't get Tavi food!" he complained loudly to his new-found sister. "Bree get food for poor Tavi?"
Bree? Briala thought incredulously. Tavi was taking this whole new-relative thing a lot better than she was. Actually, even Linx was taking it better than she was, for she was completely speechless still. She numbly listened to Linx's explanation, murmuring to herself, "He ran away...like I did." She shook her head and tried another grin. "Thanks Linx. Um...any ideas about what to do with him now?"

"I think you're going to have to get a new room," Linx sighed. "And I mean have to. You don't have a village home and this place is just too small for the both of you. I'll be reassigning you to one of the family-sized units at the end of the hall... And there aren't a lot of those so it might take a while to shift things around. In the meantime... You'll have to just both be here. I'll arrange for the next couple days to exclude you on any and all shifts if necessary." This was simply an unexpected event that changed everything. Linx was operating on improvisation alone at this point.

"Oh jeez," Briala murmured under her breath. If there was one thing she really hated, it was there being a big fuss because of her. If she was going to draw attention to herself, she wanted it to be on her terms, not because she was making a big deal about getting a room. And now she was getting reassigned from her shifts! The only entertainment in her day! That might mean more boring work, like helping in the kitchens and infirmary. No proper work for a warrior!
"No, it's okay. Really," she replied quickly, desperately not wanting Linx to start making new arrangements. "He's not going to take up much space, and I'm finally settled in. My room is a bit bigger than the other ones, and I don't have a roommate. Really, I'll be fine." Her mind began to work frantically. If she could get someone to bring her a mattress, she could set up a bed-thing on the ground. "I can...improvise."

Linx chuckled with a hint of sardonic humor as he glanced over Briala's shoulder at the cramped room. "That's no room for a child such as this... Listen. You're not going to have anything different for your work day or anything. All I'm saying here is that you can't stay in this room with him around. It might look bearably spacious at the moment, but you just wait until you try putting a cot in. It'll be like living inside a bell." That was, of course impossible. It would be cramped, pitch dark and without air. Maybe not pitch dark and without air in this case, of course.
The mouse continued without letting Briala get in a word edgewise. "Don't worry, it won't adversely affect your schedule. You'll do the exact same things as you've been trained to do in the past... Again, don't worry about it. I may be an officer who dresses like a tyrant and has enough money to build a house, ship and workshop, but I'm not evil."

Briala glowered at Linx under her lowered eyes. Tyrant indeed! she thought huffily. There were 3 reasons she didn't want to move: One was simple contraryness, in that she automatically opposed something at first. Another was that she hated having a big fuss made about her, and the last was that she had just gotten used to the room and set it up perfectly for her. Now she had to move!
Briala sighed, knowing she was defeated. Who knew what would happen if she continued to be stubborn. "Fine," she said gruffily, grabbing Tavi's paw as he started to wander. "Just...please don't let it make a big deal. I don't want there being a big hoopla because of me." She sighed again, running through her mind everything she would have to pack up. Perfect, just perfect...

"Look, you have a few days to prepare to leave while I sort this out... And it still isn't that big a deal. Far smaller a deal than having to make room in there," Linx commented while pointing over Briala's shoulder into the cramped-looking room. At least, it was cramped by his standards. His idea of a good bedroom was a bit ridiculously lavish for typical beasts' standards, which he had to constantly force himself to put into perspective. "In the meantime... What do you plan to do?"

Briala was stumped yet again, until Tavi tugged on her paw, complaining loudly, "I'm hungwee! Nobody gots me any foods, and I'm HUNGWEE!" Briala sighed, running a paw over her head and eyes. Oh my God...this is going to be like being a mother...And I'm nowhere NEAR ready to be a mother!
"I guess I'll bring him to the mess hall," she sighed. She had never felt more uncertain about something before. She sighed again and stepped around Linx, tugging Tavi behind her. "Um...I guess I'll see you later," she mumbled, heading out to where she knew the mess hall to be. Tavi, satisfied that he was finally going to get food, chattered happily in baby talk beside her. She was already getting a headache that she was sure wouldn't go away for a while. Oh, this is going to be interesting...
