Justyn sat painfully on a fairly large tree branch overlooking a smallish clearing. He shifted in his bandages painfully, and frowned. Unfortunately all he could see was his last battle, and it's terror. Linx and Archon both firing their... whatevers, and Thaddius, well doing basically the same thing. what was that a few months ago? Who knew, he was out for a long time, and recently regained consciousness... Justyn shifted again, this time unfortunately falling out of the tree and on his chest. "hmph, blasted arm sling."

"Ouch! Stupid roots! Stupid trees! Stupid stupid stupid!" Briala cursed as she tripped over yet another root. She had only been in the Otter's Fort for a few weeks, and already she was losing her touch in the woods. So much for life-long instincts, she thought wryly, ducking her head under a branch. The top of her head still brushed the branch, and a shower of dew fell on her head. She yelped, hissing, "It's cold!"
Briala brightened when she saw a faint light ahead of her. "Yes! Open space!" she bounded forward, managing to make it without tripping over any more roots. It wasn't a huge clearing, but it was nice and sunny, and root-free. She wandered closer to the center, when something fell out of the tree no more than a few feet in front of her. She froze, then relaxed, realizing the something was actually a someone, and the someone seemed to be injured. She frowned slightly. "Are you okay? What were you doing in a tree in the first place?"

"Yes, I'm fine, or I'll live at least. Let's see why WAS I in the tree again?" Justyn struggled to sit up eventually succeeding after many long grunts, "Oh yes! I was enjoying what I used to be able to do easily." He frowned at his wrappings, " Anyways what're you up to then?"

Briala chuckled at the otter's indignant reply. She reached down a paw to help him up, commenting, "Maybe killing yourself by falling out of a tree isn't the road to recovery?" She looked around the clearing again; it was fairly nice, a place she would definitely go to feel better. Of course, she wouldn't be hanging around in trees, but each to their own...
"Me?" she asked, startled by his question. She didn't know why, it made sense that he would ask the same thing of her. "Oh, you know...just looking around and stuff. Trying to get a feel for the forest again." She wryly glanced down at her now bruised feet, thinking, and...I failed.

"It's a nice place." Justyn smirked, " for as much danger as it holds I can't tear myself away from it" He looked back toward the fort. "Well, I find peace here more than others I suppose..." Justyn looked into Briala's eyes, "what about you? What do you see in the forest?"

Briala nodded slowly, accepting the other otter's answer and realizing the same applied to her. When he asked his question, her first response was to tease, as usual. "I see a place that's just about ready to kill me," she said wryly, her eyes glittering with humor. After another moment of thought, she continued slowly. "Well, I guess as an otter, I'm supposed to like the water more than land. But in the forest...I see a place where you could hide forever and never be found. A place so big you can be alone, but so welcoming you feel like you’re with friends. A place that can harbor enemies, or display new friends. I see...a forest," she finished her small speech lamely, flushing slightly as she realized she gave a long answer to a merely polite question.
"Well here I am discussing serious philosophy, and I don't even know your name!" Briala laughed, plopping down on the ground next to the other beast. She stuck out her paw and said cheerily, "I'm Briala. Briala Dawnstar. You?"

Justyn shook her hand, "Justyn, a pleasure," He chuckled, remembering her jest, some days it was true. Although he was glad she did answer him about the forest, "That.... was a good thought about the forest." smiling he continued, "but why did you blush? it was an excellent answer." Justyn turned his head up to the clouds speckling the blue sky.

Briala sighed, leaning back on her arms and watching the sun make patterns on the parts of the forest that were in the shade of the trees. She always thought that was one of the prettiest things in the world, even more beautiful then the light filling the clearing and illuminating everything, even the dust motes in the very air. Spacey much? she thought with a giggle, before answering Justyn's question.
"'Cuz I think I overanalyzed a bit, to tell the truth," she confessed, still looking off into the forest. "It's like...when you meet someone new and say, 'How're you?' and they give you a detailed explanation of exactly how their day was. Didn't want to annoy you before I properly met you," she added, flashing a smile at Justyn. There was a slight pause, then Briala spoke again. "So enough about me and my sillilness. I'm curious as to how you acquired all that," she wafted a paw in his direction, indicating all his injuries. "Care to tell me?"

Justyn sighed, "well, first let me tell you, you answered the question like I was asking... as in a deep explaination. As to how I got these," justyn glanced down at his sling, "well, all I remember is... dying in... a fight... it's all a little too fuzzy for me to know what happened for sure, but I was with Linx, Archon, and Thaddius at the time." Justyn shrugged, again his memory wasn't what it used to be...

"Peachy," Briala murmured, mostly to herself when Justyn told her that she had, in fact, answered his question properly. She listened to the rest of his little story with an eyebrow raised in an incredulous expression. When he finished, she waited a few seconds to see what else he had to say. When she finally figured out he was done, she was shocked. "Dying? Is that all?" she said sarcastically, rolling on the ground so she was lying on her back. "Seriously, care to expand on that explanation a bit?" Before she was mildly curious, now she was intrigued. Was he some sort of zombie? Hmm...

Justyn chuckled, "well I didn't die, but I was on my way to I figure, I can't quite remember..." He sighed, and frowned a little frustrated, " I'd be the last person to ask about it actually, I wasn't top notch that day..."

"Oh dear, you are a wreck," Briala said sincerely, sounding concerned. "Imagine not remembering your near death experiences! Then there's no point in having them!" She rolled over on her stomack and propped herself up on her elbows, she she could tick numbers off on her fingers. "Let's see...there's that time dear mum forgot to put away the bread knife and I tried to scalp myself, the time my lame-o cousin pushed me off a cliff, the time I was practicing dueling and my instructor went crazy and decided to exorcise me...I could go on, but they get less interesting from there." Briala beamed a grin, as though her past horrific experiences were something to be cheery about. "See? I remember each and every one of them! It's an absolute waste if you don't." Idly, she began to pluck blades of grass and shred them with her dainty paws, seeing how thin she could make each shred before it broke.

Justyn chuckled as he stood slowly. Gently he turned toward's this new friend and offered a paw up, as a gentle smile drifted on his face. "I just.... need to know.... me." His eyes grew blurred, " Are you ever lonely?" After his incident this was all he ever really felt. "It's sad. It takes so much to get to know ourselves. I wish it was something we were born with."

Without hesitation, Briala accepted the help up. Other beasts might have been worried about getting help from someone whose already wounded, but Briala had no such qualms. She figured if he thought he could help, then he just as well help. She hauled herself up and brushed off her clothes, as always checking to make sure she had her daggers in their sheaths and the bow and quiver was on the ground next to her.
Briala considered her new friend carefully. He seemed to be a lot more thoughtful then many of the others she had met. It was interesting. "Well, I found thorugh experience that the best way to find ourself is to be on your own," she replied cheerfully, but sincerely. Idly, she walked around to the tree Justyn had fallen out of and plucked off a branch, examining its leaves with her delicate paws. "I lived on my own in Mossflower for a long time on my own, and I was only lonely in the beginning. But you get used to the silence and solitude, and there's not the influence of others around you. That's how you get to know yourself. So, in answer to your question...No, I don't get lonely. Not anymore."
Briala flashed a smile, saying cheerily, "Was that a good enough answer?" she laughed slightly and pulled out one of her daggers and began to absently whittle away at the branch in her hand, working with the curved dagger easily.

Justyn chuckled, he liked being able to relate to someone else who understood. "Need I answer? Well you have a point." He sighed as he examined the skies in the second of silence he kept, wishing he was free enough to follow them. "I can't remember anything, but that doesn't matter. I hold all the cards." He continued to gaze at the blue in it's beauty.
