Aye, a longbow could pobably fire the same distance as a small balista.

True, but a ballista can fire heavier metal bolts at a higher velocity, with more torque and a lot of momentum. They're a lot more appropriate for light ship-to-ship combat.

I don't know exactly what era this is in but if it's anything post-Legend of Luke I'd guess a lot. With no more monopoly on the ocean.

I mean, with Gabool's fleet pretty much decommissioned by the end of Mariel of Redwall, there would be no more iron grip on the ocean. Which means there would be a lot of small factions springing up with their own ships trying to get a hold on things.
