The hare's words perked Ronin up. Then again...why couldn't the beast have given an approximate number? "Enough to bog down the scouts" was vague. He sighed. This was why he had chosen the kitchen over the army. He had not doubt that all this talk made perfect sense to a beast who had grown up in an army, but he hadn't.
The shrew sped up his pace as he followed Fishrudder through the path the otter had beaten through the thorns. They ran. Shouldn't we be trying to be quiet? The vermin probably weren't going anywhere. If anything, from what he could make of the hare's report, the vemin were heading in roughly their direction.
"Ye just gonna hit them, sir?"

*As soon as Fishrudder had started running, Dantin took off after him. Finally, he was going to get to see some action! He whipped out his sword and followed at top speed, he heard the exchange of words between the shrew and the hare* "Yeah, we can't just leave 'em to the vermin, they need our help!"

Ronin sighed. Well, the hare could have been more clear in the first place. He trotted along with the others, finally cresting a small rise. Down below the scouts were in the midst of fighting the small band of vermin. It wasn't large, maybe made up of a dozen or so beasts. The shrew paused, dropped to one knee and sighted along the repeater's barrel at a rat that was on the outskirts of the fight. He had fired the thing several times back at the fort, but still didn't trust his aim enough to shoot into the actual fight.
The trigger didn't do anything. It wouldn't even budge. He cursed under his breath. Standing up, he continued on down the hill. At least the hunk of metal was still good for something. The rat he had been aiming at had spied the shrew and was running towards him, slashing with a sword and grinning. Ronin hefted the weapon in both paws, slipped under the blade, and smashed the bolt repeater into the rat's jaw. The vemin stumbled back, blood streaming from his mouth.
Before the rat could recover Ronin let go of the repeater, letting it hang on its strap. He pulled out his small rapier and plunged it into the larger beast's heart, pulling it out before the weight of the rat snapped it. The cook turned then towards the real fight. He couldn't quite tell which way it was going, either in favor of the vermin or of the soldiers. He took a quick step forward as he saw a hare falter under the pike of a large weasel. Swishing his rapier in the air, the shrew's free paw hit the side of his swinging bolt repeater, and he felt a button go in. He steadied it, accidentally touching the trigger. A bolt fired into the ground next to his footpaw and the kick of the weapon bruised his side. He looked down. Lesson one. Do not ever touch the trigger even if it's not firing. Lesson two. That button turns it on and off.
Sheathing the bloody rapier and picking the bolt repeater back up again, Ronin held it as he had practiced and ran towards the weasel.
"Hey!"
His gruff shout served the purpose he wanted it to. The pike wielding weasel swung around the face him, leaving the injured hare on the ground. Ronin fired into the thing's face before the weasel could take a stab at him. The result was hideous to say the least. The vermin fell backwards from the impact, the bolt lodged into one of his eyes. Well, guess it really does work after all. Clicking the little button the shrew took out his rapier. He was too close now to use the repeater without the fear of hurting one of his allies.

*As soon as they had crested the small hill and sighted the vermin, Dantin completely forgot about his repeater, having never used a long range weapon in battle, he was use to having to close the distance with the enemy, which he did speedily. He rushed into the melee and and stabbed a weasel in the back, this got the rest of the vermin's attention and they turned and realised that they where getting attacked from behind. A rat swung at Dantin's head but he just leaned back and let the sword whistle by in front of him, he then jumped foward and slashed from left to right across the rats midsection and it fell screaming.
*Dantin turned just in time to see another sword coming down towards him, he jumped sideways quickly but not fast enough for the blow to completly miss, it cut into his left shoulder but not very far, Dantin brought his left arm up and grabbed the paw that was holding the sword and roughly push it aside as he stabbed with his right sword hand. He pulled it out quickly so he wouldn't loose it. He glanced around and saw a mouse that was getting hemmed in on all sides. Dantin quickly fought his way over through the vermin and went back to back with the mouse. He parried and thrusted, taking a couple of nicks and cuts but nothing serious, hoping that relief would come soon. He noticed that the mouse he was back to back with was not doing so well*
"Are you ok?" *He said to the mouse* "They got me in the shoulder and leg before you got here, I don't know how much longer I can go" *Dantin wondered if they where the only ones left, he couldn't tell because of all beasts around them blocked out the view*

OOC: K, finally doing it, there aren't that many maybe 15
BIC: Fishrudder was at the front of the small column that charged into battle. He drew his mighty broadsword and charged at the group of vermin, he instantly loped one of the unsuspecting vermin's heads off. A grizzled rat stabbed with a spear, Fishrudder dodged back, the spear caught a small section of his belly, not mortal, but it would hurt. He sliced through the spear and slashed across the rat's chest, mortally wounding it. He turned quickly, Dantin was struggling with the other mouse in the group. Fishrudder fought across the small clearing to the two mice. He said to the two "Room for another?

OOC: Seeing as how Ronin isn't posting, I'm going to... and if your wondering about the green, just look at my sig.
BIC: *Dantin almost laughed with joy when the commander joined them* "Well, yeah! *he then jerked his head in the direction of the other mouse* They got him in the shoulder and leg before I got over here so I'm not sure how long he'll hold out... Whats the plan? Just form the ole back to back to back fighting circle?" *While Dantin had been talking, he blocked a blade that was coming down in an arc at him, he then lashed out quickly, killing the vermin holding the sword in the process. After that, all he had time to do was parry a number of slashes directed towards him and talk.*

Ronin skipped around the outskirts of the fight. He knew he’d be dead if he tried to push through to the middle of it like Dantin and Fishrudder were doing. He just wasn’t that great a warrior, not to mention his smaller size was more advantages out on the fringes. He would dart in, circling around a random vermin, and then disappear back into the brush, leaving said vermin with several threateningly deep cuts from his rapier. In and out. In and out. Soon he had two more kills to his credit.
One of his next quick forays into the melee, the shrew managed to catch a glimpse of the others. The scouts had, after the vermin’s initial route, started fighting back. Other members of the patrol were also engaging their enemies, mostly in one-on-one combat. Ronin slid up behind one of the two rats trading parries with Dantin. His rapier flicked out, plunging into the base of on of the large rodent’s neck before the shrew slipped back out of the fight again.
Things were going good. This was much better than what had happened to him on his first patrol. Really though, the fort should run more group combat drills. Spars are fine, but it doesn’t quite prepare you for facing a concentrated group. The numbers of the vermin had start to dwindle noticeably. The rest of the patrol was in the process of finished a few gasping rodents off. Of the original dozen or so, only three remained. Two of them, huge stoats, were hacking and slashing at Dantin and Fishrudder. The third, a rather smallish cat-like creature, decided that now was the time to run away.
It took off into the trees. Unfortunately, it happened to run into Ronin’s paw which was clutched firmly around a rock. The little thing stumbled back, dazed. Ronin gave it another firm knock on the head and is bumped to the ground, blacking out. The shrew tied its paws behind it. Although it looked like an extremely small wildcat, the feline was still larger than him. He dragged it out of the bushes to see if the other two had been finished off yet.

**Seor was trekking along, exploring the outskirts of Otter's Fort, when she had seen a group of others, walking towards...somewhere? By the light of the scorching sun, the otter could make out that one of them was Captain Fishrudder. Even though she was still a newcomer, she had an idea of the occupants of Otter's Holt. Deciding to follow them, she stayed at a far enough distance, hoping that they wouldn't mind her doing so. On the way, Seor saw a nearby stream, and marking the way the others were going, she ran to take a quick drink. As soon as she was finished, she set off course again. At the top of a hill, Seor saw the horde of vermin attacking the small group. Her eyes scanning the horizon, the otter could make out one creature who had skipped around the outskirts of the battle. Smiling, she knew that the others were winning, she could tell by the slain vermin and the others who were running away. But then she gasped. Her eyes had travelled farther away, almost out of her eyesight, but still the otter could make out a glimpse of the vermin who were still alive joining a much larger group. Estimating quickly, the otter guessed that there were about two or threescore of vermin. It was too much for the otter. She ran down towards the group. Coming up to face Captain Fishrudder, Seor halted to a stop.** Sir, vermin... There's more 'o them... still far 'way... but lots. **The otter tried her best to make her words clear, but running that far had put her out of breath, even though she was a regular excersiser, and didn't often get tired from running, and had given her a terrible cramp at her side.** Sir, they're lots... Don't know... Think they'll come this way... Not sure though.

**Fishrudder parried a blow from the ferret and lunged forward, actually droping his broadsword, and putting all his weight into a punch on the uncovered stoat's stomach, he drew a dagger with his opposite hand and stabbed down on the doubled over stoat, slicing it's vertebrae, leaving it paralyzed. He heard the new recruit stumble over her words, but she was out of breath. He got the jist of it though. He said to her.** Ok **He watched as a hare stabbed the stoat in the back, killing him.** Rest a bit, I will send a hare for reinforcements. **He sent the three hares back to go get reinforcements he called out to Dantin** Come with me. **He then took the remaining hare, who had already bandaged the wound on his soldier. He said to them** Let's get out of here, we are going scouting. Ok?

*Dantin was a little tired after their little scrap but he shook it off easily enough. He had also heard that there where more on their way. He wondered why they didn't just get ready. What was there to scout?* "We're with you, sir! Um, what are we scouting for?"

Numbers, things like that. **He turned to the remaining otter's and the single mouse, in all there was about five left. He said to them** Find a defensible position and stay there, Dantin, Enuch, come with me. **FIshrudder headed off into the woods towards where Seor had pointed out.

**Seor took a deep breath in, and when she finally stopped panting, the otter ran up to catch up to the scouts.** Er- sir. If you don't mind, can I come with the rest of you?
OOC: I don't want to sound mean or anything, but my character's name is Seor, not Seol. Thanks!

OOC: Sorry, your kinda new, and I have been gone lately, it's fine, I'll always listen.
IC: Stay back here, you just got here, get the rest to a defensible position and stay there, if you don't stay there, then you won't have a good chance of living. **Fishrudder jogged off towards the location of the army, Seor had given him a clue of where to go, and that's where he planned on going.**

OOC: It's alright. Anyways, you're right too, I'm still kinda new.
BIC: Stay back here, you just got here, get the rest to a defensible position and stay there, if you don't stay there, then you won't have a good chance of living. **Seor saluted with her sword.** Yes sir! I'll just do my best! **Turning around, the otter looked around.**
OOC: How many patrollers were there in all, in the beginning?
