Steel-clad class? That has a ring to it... Artillery has that advantage. Naming can wait, you're right.

"Better get started with prelim ship design. May want to pull some beasts from the Stormy Otter's design team for help, I've never designed a ship before." But it was piecing together in his mind. The components that distinguished this from other ships were coming together now. This could really work, he could pay for all of it and the fort would have an asset the world had never seen.

Why not ask me for more than just monitary contibutions? I've been around dozens of ships in a few years, so I know some of them quite well.

Raiden seemed to fill every role he was asked for... Well, he seemed to want to do so. Linx still had his doubts as far as naval stuff went and it might be best to just start with questions. "Got any blueprints?"

I'll just fish a large sheet or parchment out of my trousers shall I? Kidding... While I have no blueprints for ships, I do have a memory for details. No substitute for the designs, but it's the best I can do.

"Like I said, I'll need some real design team members on this. Big project, you know what I'm saying?" It would be the greatest achievement he had made so far... When would he stop?
OOC: This may require a new character...

I know, but what better way to know your foe's strengths and weaknesses than someone who knows being on the team? I can give comparitive details on most ship types, the effective range in favourable conditions, optimum crew, max cargo, hull thickness... All that kind of detail, and with that knowlege, I can help give a design that can counter a ship of even two classes higher. For example, the sloop could be equal to a destroyer in armour and better in speed.

"Would that be factoring in the use of cannons as opposed to ballistae? You haven't seen these in action yet." The results were all-out devastating. Each could start a lethal fire, burst on impact in a shower of flame and shrapnel, and put a serious dent in any hull. Pretty much a scaled-up fire thrower, with repeating capability since there was no crank.

Even with those. Against a bigger ship, there's more crew to return fire and to put out fires. Even a steel-clad would take a pounding against a ship she couldn't sink in one volley.

Lore wandered casually up to where Linx and Raiden were talking, and she simply stood there listening for a few moments. These two were well-versed in weaponry, and while she knew how to wield weapons, she was lacking in knowledge of all the technical aspects that they possessed. Nevertheless, Lore listened to them with interest, remaining until one or the other acknowledged her.

"Again, you haven't seen the cannons at work. Especially when used in broadside, something very few ships have, if any, right now, they can cripple a ship so severely it wouldn't be able to do a thing. One shot can clear an entire deck." Linx finally noticed Lore and turned to her. He hoped she hadn't been waiting for a very long period of time or anything. He didn't intend to be impolite. "Hey. Lore. How you doing?"

"Oh, pretty well, thank you. I'm a bit bored, which explains why I'm here, dropping in on you both. A discussion of weapons, is it? What brought this on?" That last remark was mostly a joke, born out of boredom. But then Lore felt a sudden apprehension for interrupting, but what else was there to do? It wasn't (yet) considered a crime for talking to someone, interrupting or not.

"I just had a really interesting idea and I'm planning to make a ship around it now... Sounds like something a dibbun might say." Indeed, it sounded about the same as making a fort out of pillows. Linx was throwing a big idea out there, but he did have the finances for a small ship. "No sail, no oars, just a furnace."

Maybe, but have you seen the skill of some Destroyer crews? They can keep their ship narrow on to a target and hammer them with a ballista from range. Not even steel could survive a protracted battering. What's worse, some pirates work in pairs or threes. That makes a boradside less effective.
**If Raiden could right normally, he'd probably have written a few chapters on tactics and ships in a book on Naval Warfare. But as it was, he caught the direction that Linx had began to look in; Lore. Raising the edge of his hat with a paw for a moment, Raiden smiled at the newcommer to the disscussion.**
Hey Lore. How are you?

Confusion plainly showed itself on Lore's face. "Only a furnace? But aren't sail and oars some of the staples of a ship? Don't think I'm doubting your ability; I just haven't heard of something like this before. But knowing you and your skills, it will be a real gem, I am sure of it."
Then, realizing that Raiden was addressing her, Lore turned to look at him. "Hey Raiden. You're involved in this too? Are you sure this isn't some hare-brained idea of Linx's?" Again, Lore was only joking.
