Linx was wearing his summer garb again. This equated to barely any garb. He wore a dark gray, open vest with nothing else on his torso and a pair of shorts that, although keeping utilitarian, certainly looked provocative on him; after all, anything did. Sitting at the bar on a high stool with a glass of cranberry juice, he was the perfectly typical summer mouse for the fort.
It didn't mean that his identity was discounted, though. He got a lot of stares from beasts in the bar. Sitting there and sipping his juice, he couldn't really feel comfortable. Nobody was being really sociable.

Emeral was sitting at the other end of the bar sitting, and drinking her second glass of elderberry wine. She was alone, and couldn't help to see why everyone was staring. It was that inventor mouse...Linx. She sighed for a second, then turned back to her drink.

Looking around the room hesitantly, Linx saw only one beast who wasn't gawking at him. He took this as grounds to pay her a visit, and slowly stood up, glass in paw, to walk over to where she sat. The mouse claimed a conveniently empty stool beside her. "Well, you got my attention for not giving me any. Congratulations."

Emeral giggled for a moment. "What do you want?" It seemed that she changed her attitude completly from laughing to being completely serious. She took another sip from her drink, then looked at him expecting a quick answer.

"I dunno, a reason why would help..." Linx became aware that the entire tavern had grown silent when he stood up. At least they were all starting to talk again now that he was sitting and talking himself. "You're the only beast in here to not stare at me. First of all, you have my thanks..."

"Why? Just because you are an important inventor doesn't mean I should stare now does it? You're probably just a normal beast, if there is such a thing." Emeral looked around for a moment to see what others were doing, then turned her attention back to Linx. "Soo..." She didn't know what to say.

"So how come I've never seen you before?" Linx was actually a regular there. He spent about half an hour in the tavern daily on average and it meant that he knew most of its devoted customers. Emeral, however, looked completely foreign to him. "Only skunk besides Gore in the whole fort..."

"Another skunk? Never met him. I don't come here super often, I stay home most of the time." Emeral was staying to herself. She didn't really have a lot talk in her. She was mostly action and no talk.

"You don't come here super often," Linx repeated slowly, trying to wrap his mind around the idea carried by that phrase. "Well, welcome to the Fort Tavern. I was referring to a... Dengoro Tana... Yeah. I dunno if you've heard of him or not, he's the only other skunk in the fort that I know about. The only one at all that I knew about until just now, actually."

"Nope, never heard of 'im..." Emeral put her elbows on the table. "I should meet him some time..." Emeral said softly. "So, is that all?" She rested her head on her arms, and glanced back over to Linx.

"Is that all, well, now we've started a conversation! And you know I'm Linx Exotic, you can't run out of things to talk about when you're around me..." The mouse flashed a grin as he prepared his next sentence. He couldn't run out but he certainly could be delayed. "Really... I know the guy really well, he, uh... He's enlisted, too. Are you enlisted?"

"Enlisted in the wha...oh army... no I'm not.... I don't like fighting, and really I don't know why i'm here, I should go looking for my parents at redwall, that is if they weren't killed by vermin on the way. It was the only reason they even left me here anyway..." A single tear dropped from her eye unto her arm. "Whatever though..."

Linx was mildly surprised– only mildly, though– at how sensitive this skunk seemed. It was like that was a trait of her entire species, but he wasn't one to judge. He only knew two of them at that point, and one of them not very well, of course. "Let me guess. No job, no house, not much money?"

"No... house, job, and...not much money, but I get by." Emeral looked down at the floor. She didn't like when people got into her personal thoughts, but still responded. At the same time though, she visioned herself spraying Linx for laughes, then walking away.

Linx, meanwhile, was envisioning taking Emeral in under his figurative wing like he did so many beasts. After all, he could afford it easily. It was clear that he was ready to. "How? No house, where do you sleep? No job, how do you eat? Come on. It looks like I'm doing my thing again."
