"Guns are obviously your forte, whereas I know nearly nothing about them. What say you choose something you'd recommend, and I'll buy that. I think your judgment would be better than mine, when it comes to this." And, it was true. Lore was familiar only with the traditional weapons, and it was difficult for her to follow what Linx was saying. She wanted something that would last, and whatever the cost was, she'd pay it.

"OK, well, I'll try and make it cost as little as I can... Maybe two spare magazines, so... A total of 29 coins, you think you can handle that?" That was about a week and three days' wages for an average fort resident. Linx was still unsure if Lore could afford it, though; many a beast still had to save up to buy a repeater at all. "If you can't... I dunno, if you enlist you get one for free, heh..."

"29 coins.. I don't have quite that much. I suppose I'll enlist, then." There was no harm in that, as far as Lore could tell. The experience might be worth it too.

"Well, considering you probably don't even have a house, that's a good idea. Once you get through training you might even agree with me." Linx chuckled dryly at his own remark. Beasts tended to hate basic and advanced training, but after all, it was a military. Civilians weren't supposed to be in it in the first place.

"Sign me up, then. And, I can assure you, I'm no wet behind the ears recruit. There won't be any problems coming from me." Whether he believed that or not, she didn't care. Although she just wanted to own a gun, that didn't mean that she couldn't be serious about going through the training.

"OK, prepare for a few months of inferno, come on back to the fort, I'll sign you up." With that, Linx brushed past Lore and started back north. She probably had no idea what she'd just signed herself up for, but then again, nobody did. That was probably why a fifth of their recruits washed out in the first week.

"You won't scare me away, I hope you realize." Lore followed Linx, ready to get this over with, and actually start the training - whenever that would be.

"Actually, I have to sign you up for a room and stuff like that, you get to unpack, your training... Probably starts tomorrow. Or next week. I dunno when the next training group starts, really." Linx looked over his shoulder at Lore curiously. It looked like she wasn't fazed much by the idea of some training. "...I won't scare you away. The drill sergeant might."

"Sounds like a plan, then." Lore caught Linx looking at her, as though he were surprised at her lack of apprehension or fear or whatever it was most beasts experienced. What he thought made no difference, at least not to her. "He might make me nervous, but I won't run away."

"Nervous? Exhausted and hateful is more accurate. I doubt anyone is ever really nervous," Linx mused as he walked. Lore just didn't seem to be getting it. It was far easier to buy a repeater than it was to enlist. "Oh, did you know that it's illegal to export the latest generation of weapons? I can only sell obsolete stuff outside the fort. The best has to stay within it."

"Whichever, Linx. I don't care one way or the other." It wasn't that she didn't 'get it', but rather that she was indifferent. Training under some irate drill sergeant would be nothing compared to what she'd seen before coming to the fort. As to his last comment, she wasn't sure why he was bringing it up. "Why tell me that? I'm not about to export your weapons."

"Because if you've had any experience with repeaters before now, it's completely useless at the fort," Linx replied flatly. "Not that I know if you've had any. Just letting you know. Be sure to have fun relearning embarrassingly simple military functions that have the potential to seem ridiculously difficult, OK?" The fort training procedure had, after a few heated discussions with other officers, turned into something that could churn out some real warriors. It also broke some inferior ones, too.

"I appreciate the warning, but not the sarcasm," threw back Lore, not at all amused. "Just sign me up and go take your 'humor' somewhere else, if you please." She wasn't completely angry, just tired of Linx's dry humor.

"Hey, I wasn't gonna take it anywhere, I was trying to be alone out here and then you show up... Whatever. Let's just get back to the fort. Bickering is for beasts minus brains." Linx was about as tired of it as well. However, he couldn't do much else since he was simply so irritated with having to talk right then.

Lore responded with a final jab. "Well, seeing how long you've been living at the Fort, you should know that privacy is mostly nonexistent. But, let's just go. This is getting us nowhere."
