"Hmm, that reminds me. Wouldn't it be a good idea if those who weren't fighters made some sort of contribution to help with expenses? A sort of tax, or something? Or is there already one?" Somehow, it didn't seem right that Linx was paying for most of this himself. If she had money to spare, Lore would have willingly contributed.

"There is, you know... 10 percent income tax for every employed beast in the fort. And a 15 percent tax on external trade revenues. It really pays off, the income tax alone is enough to pay for the wages of the entire fort complement, and then some. And that tax, the income tax, I mean, is pretty lenient, considering... I've heard of it getting up to 25, even 30 percent in places!" That was just another reason that beasts immigrated to the fort as if they were magnetically attracted– The taxes in the fort were low. "The thing is, that money... Only so much of that money is partitioned off for my budget on projects and stuff. Progress would be about half as fast were it not for my own contributions."

"I figured that there had to be some sort of a tax. But I still think that more of that money should be allocated over to your part of things. After all, defense of the Fort is pretty important." Lore made a mental note that if ever she came across a windfall of some kind, to donate some of it to Linx's coffers, so to speak.

"Well, of course it is... But to be honest, Lore, I'd rather donate to the fort and speed up progress than end up having too much money laying around! I don't want to have to spend the money I make on useless things like gold trim for every piece of furniture in my house. Why not just put it back where I like to see it?" Linx used much of his profits to support his research, as well. It took a lot of time and resting on his laurels to be able to spend a few weeks just researching. It didn't hurt that he could always just dip into the steady cash flow originating in the discreet business of recreational assistance, also known as toys.

"Apologies, I guess, Linx. I didn't mean that you were putting the money into things that weren't useful." Lore rubbed her paws together, looking apologetic. That wasn't what she had meant at all, but it sounded like it had come out wrong. Ah well, what could you do? "You're absolutely right; donating to the fort is important too, as is using it for things you're interested in."

"Well, I'm... Interested in the fort... Among other things. I do spend it on what I like, though, that's for sure." There was only so much money he could spend on non-fort-related things that he liked, though. Beyond a point, it was simply impossible. It looked like Lore thought he was spending money on useless things, though. Hedonism isn't useless! "And there's... Plenty of money... If I went around in a big red velvet cape and a thick coat all the time, would you believe me when I said I have too much money just sitting around and waiting to be spent?"

Lore grinned sheepishly. She hadn't meant to put him on the defensive, as he seemed to think she had. "I'm sure your interests are largely concerned with the wellbeing of the Fort, Linx. I wasn't trying to imply anything else. There is nothing wrong with using your money on things you enjoy." She hoped that she was being convincing, and that he wouldn't think she was just saying things to placate him, because that was the furthest thing from her mind. She cast about for another topic, one that wouldn't involve a minor dispute between them. "So.. How's Archon these days?" That probably wasn't considered a "harmless" topic, but it was better than nothing.

"Archon? He's, um..." Linx had to take a few seconds to come up with a response to this. It seemed like a slightly random connection, unless Lore had made one between him and where Linx spent his money. This was just another element of the situation that the mouse felt the need to note, despite its hindering his actual speech. "He's doing great, actually. He might be becoming a parent soon..."

"A parent, really? That's.. interesting." Not that she doubted anything about Archon, though. "So, he's "found" someone, then?" She hated the way that sounded, as though she thought that Archon would never find someone. But words are tricky things, so she threw in another statement that would hopefully clarify her question. "I'm glad for him, though."

"So am I... He seems fixed on his original lifestyle, though. Which means it's like mine but slightly watered down. I dunno how that'll work once he has a child in the mix, but I'm sure glad Amathyst has a house of her own. I don't want to think about what it'd be like if... Whatever. It isn't even confirmed that she's got anyone on the way, anyway." Apparently, Linx didn't exactly care about spreading information that others may have found sensitive. In this case, though, it was just a plainly overt deal.

"It sounds like they're in a complicated spot. But I'm sure they'll figure something out. How would that affect your relationship with him, though?" Lore realized after she had said it that Linx might view that question as being too personal to answer. Well, she couldn't take the words back, so she just waited for him to say something.

"It wouldn't affect it at all, none of us care about that, really..." Apparently, the nature of his polygamy hadn't really sunken into Lore's mind. It was far more unconditional than it might have seemed at first glance. It didn't matter to any of them what the species, age– assuming it was a reasonable age of consent–, income, background, or familial status of other potential mates were. They were fair game anyway, and nothing could change that. And Mokwa is 15! Why am I with a guy who's almost ten years younger than me?
