"The Fort is really coming along; I am glad to hear that. And, there's nothing wrong with having more wallguards than enough. It's better that way, because then the guards can work in shifts." Lore kept looking around, impressed at the surroundings. It wasn't as though she'd never seen any of this before, but that she hadn't taken the time to look closely.

"It's better because if Finnerator's paying more wall guards then she has an excuse to slash my budget and make me pay for my ventures privately," Linx muttered with a low, bitter inflection. They were getting close enough to the wall to see actual faces now. "More wall guards... Blessing or curse?"

"I see. Well, have you told her what you think? She might listen," replied Lore, thinking that Finnerator seemed a decent beast who would at least hear someone out. "As for having more wallguards, it's a mix of both, I'd say." Somehow, Lore doubted that the alternative of having too little, and also too many who weren't working, would be well received.

"It's just the low recruiting standards that bother me. The training program still needs tightening up... And only a pawful of recruits wash out during training, it's just sad." It was in Linx's interests to value quality over quantity. Sheer numbers weren't going to work, so perhaps a few elites running things would. "I've tried taking it to her but she's just... She's too busy with paperwork. Yeah, right. She'd better just marry it at this rate."

"Hm. And why are the standards so low?" Lore was surprised; from what she knew of the Fort, she would have expected the opposite. "Perhaps the commanding officers who are causing the problem (if that's the case) should be replaced."

"Hey, Fishrudder's in charge of that, have fun kicking him out. Worked his way in with Finnerator, it seems... And I just handle weapons. I'm having some talks with him about who gets to use them, though, because the training stuff is plain old awful when he alone handles it. Actually, it's like he pays no attention to it at all." At times, Linx felt that Fishrudder did absolutely nothing except sometimes command the battlefield. It was aggravating at the best of times.

"If it's doable, I wouldn't mind working towards becoming a commanding officer," said Lore, half to herself. It sounded as though things needed improvement, but she wasn't saying that she was the one to do the job. It was just an idea. "Corruption is everywhere, I suppose." But, she wondered what Fishrudder's side of the story was...

"I don't know if it's actual corruption, I mean... Not much of a crime group or anything to corrupt to. He's just being lazy or something. I can think of civilians who would make better commanders than that one." The problem was that there was no way to really replace him. All Linx could think of that was still legal was the formation of a sprawling elite unit that would engulf most of the fort, leaving the rest as unofficial 'trainees'.

"It seems corrupt, because he is basically using his position and trying to get into Finnerator's 'good books', if you understand me." Lore paused and glanced around before continuing. "I think I'd be right in guessing that you had ideas about fixing this."

"Oh, yeah, fixing," Linx replied with a smirk as he made the paw motions of loading and cocking a bolt repeater. He hadn't actually thought of that and was using it for the humor now, but the idea was a bit unnerving in how obvious it seemed. "I'm not gonna do that, I'm too nice... But if he's not even around enough for me to confront him, I'm helpless."

Lore couldn't resist a laugh, as Linx mimed setting up a repeater for firing. "Doing that would land you straight into a cell. I don't recommend it." Then, she got serious again. "Corral him sometime when he's not busy and can't run off." She shrugged and continued, "It's what I'd do."

"Finding him and doing that is about as easy as filling a sieve with water. He's that good at it. Maybe we could employ him as a spy..." Now it was Linx's turn to laugh. All he wanted was to get back to the fort at this point, so he quickened his pace at a barely noticeable rate. "And then you have to wait for him to actually follow through with any of what you said."

"Well, then I don't know what else to tell you. Looks like you'll have to work out your problems on your own.." Lore wasn't angry, but what else was there to say? She was tired of talking, and even more tired of walking. Getting back to the fort was her priority, and she began walking faster, just as Linx did the same thing. Well, at least they were on the same page.

"So I guess I'll, uh, write you in for one of the third floor rooms... The barracks' attic was recently redesigned to act as a small third floor so as to accommodate for additional members... And then you'll have some ridiculously easy training to do. I'm still planning on throwing a brick at Fishrudder over that one." Eventually, they made it to the gates, which were already so wide open that any signal to the sentries might have been taken as an insult. Linx passed underneath the giant stone arch wordlessly, although he let out an audible sigh of relief as its shadow protected him from the glaring sun.

"That's fine with me. I don't plan on spending much time in there, anyway." Lore rolled her eyes at Linx's remark about the training. "It had better not be too easy. I don't want to be bored." She looked away then and focused her eyes on the arch; it was a formidable structure, but it wasn't interesting enough to hold her attention.
